"You Plan...God Laughs"

It’s January, and I have a month and a half before my first show. I spent the Holidays in Berlin and Prague this year visiting my daughter. Keegan has lived in Berlin for the last 8 years. Of course, we have been to Berlin many times, but never at Christmas, and Europe knows how to do it big time.

Truth is, I always go overboard at Christmas (because mine growing up was dismal), and going to Berlin, where there are 37 Christmas Markets was going to rival anything I could dish out, and David and I were really looking forward to it. It was really lovely and I think we might have gone to almost all of those Markets!

But every time I visit Keegs, I have some spectacular accident. I don’t know what it is…..One time it was a bike accident where I almost skied on my face into a metal table, another…I was on a scooter and drove it over the top of a car. Anyway, you get my drift. This time, I wasn’t there but an hour, and I tripped and landed flat on my face on the bathroom floor. (Old German apartments are not made like American ones.) Well, I hurt my hand and knee and cut my lip pretty badly too.

I thought I should go to the emergency room, but the German medical system is pretty German, in that if you don’t have Stage 4 Cancer, they are going to give you a Tylenol and say buck up buddy. So I didn’t go and I didn’t say too much because anyone who is a mom knows you don’t screw up a vaycay with your adult kids by complaining about some stupid thing you did….So, I didn’t. And we walked about 9 miles a day (one day 13) and climbed 5 stories multiple times a day to her apartment, and had a lovely time, even though I was in pain.

Prague was crowded but lovely, and if you have never gone, you just have to….skip the castle though (way too many people and not much to see) and focus on the Old Town and go to the Opera if you get a chance. Anyway, it was wonderful.

So got home and slept for three days straight. My last show was three days before we left, and I had done 22 shows this year, so I was exhausted….Then I went to the doctor to check out my hand and knee because it had never stopped aching. Well, I have a broken wrist and am having an MRI on my knee on Monday.

The worst part is she said no art for 4 weeks….and I freaking don’t know what to do with myself. I have been trying to do a little, but I can’t really cut out anything, and it’s incredibly frustrating. I guess that’s the punch line. ”You plan …God Laughs” An old Yiddish saying that is truly apropos.

Anyway, I will be at Artigras in Palm Beach in the middle of February and hope to see some of you all there. By then, I’ll have the cast off and hope to be up and running literally by then. Keep the faith.
